DEBATE TEAM
Meigs' inaugural Debate Club finished the last competitive debate of the academic year at Vanderbilt University Friday night with spectacular results.
Meigs' debate teams winning 3 out of 3 debates Friday night were as follows: Jarius "J.J." Valeriano Roger Chen Kartik Rachakonda Anish Krishnan Hannah Sanders Evelyn "Evie" Stack Ommay Khyr - who competed as a "Maverick" (lone debater) Top speaker awards for the competition Friday night were awarded as follows: 1st place Hannah 3rd place Evelyn 4th place Ommay Khyr (AKA "Maverick") 6th place Roger 7th place Kartik 9th place Anish (note of importance: Meigs won 6 of the top 10 speaker awards) Thank you to the support of all of the Meigs' parents and families who braved the rainy weather Friday night to transport and support our team members (plus their continued support at our off-site training days and other competitions this year). Special thanks to our VOLUNTEER coach - current HFA senior and Meigs' alumnus, Soteria Reid, who made our successes possible with her excellent teaching and guidance! DANCE TEAM

NLE RESULTS
The National Latin Exam, sponsored by the American Classical League and National Junior Classical League, is a comprehensive test made up of 40 questions. This year's national average for the Latin 1 exam was 29. Eighth graders receive medals and/or special certificates of recognition. Gold medals are given for the top scores, followed by silver medals, magna cum laude certificates, and cum laude certificates. This year twenty 8th graders received awards. At the Latin I level: Dinorah Calderon, Harrison Cover, Sam Halbert Emily Martinez-Perez, Abby Mendez, Charlie Rost , Rachel Stahel, and Yashu Tang received gold medals; Anna Bagwell, Connor Burnett, John Hagan, Andrew Pelham, and Caradine Walker received silver medals; Lauren Block and Isabella Rassavong were awarded magna cum laude certificates; Jessica Castillo, Eric Sha, Lucy Williams, Addison Wright, and Sue Zhang received cum laude certificates. CHESS CLUB
On Saturday, March 24th the Tennessee State TEAM chess championships were held at Tennessee Tech in Cookeville and Meigs was well represented, having previously qualified. When the dust settled, out Elementary team finished seventh and our Junior High team brought home the fourth place trophy! Many thanks and congratulations to Robert Cheng, Frank Yang, Ben Birkenmeier, Donovan Alvarez, Tyler Reynolds, Chaitanya Gokhale, Jack Reynolds, James Scott and Devmi Hewavithana for making the trip and doing so well!
On Saturday, March 3rd, the Regional qualifier for the Tennessee Team Chess Championships was held at Montgomery Bell Academy. Meigs was well represented with a Junior High team and an Elementary team. In the Junior High section, we placed FOURTH out of 8 teams and will go to "state"! Those players were Robert Cheng, Jonathan Lange, Ben Berkenmeier and Donovan Alvarez. In the Elementary section, our team tied for FIRST place out of 20 teams and took home the second place trophy after three heated playoff rounds! This team will also go to the state championships. Those players were Tyler Reynolds, Chaitanya Gokhale, Jack Reynolds, James Scott and Devmi Hewavithana. It is a great honor to have both our Junior High and Elementary teams represent us on March 24th at Tennessee Tech in Cookeville. Congratulations to these Cavaliers of the Chessboard and good luck at "state"! On Saturday, February 17th, the Tennessee State Chess Championships were held at Tenn. Tech. Univ. in Cookeville. Three of our students had qualified to play and here are their results. In the Elementary section, Chaitanya Gokhale finished a respectable 20th. Tyler Reynolds took home the SIXTH place trophy. In the Junior High section, Robert Cheng lost only to the champion and won the FOURTH place trophy. Congratulations and "way to go!" to these Cavaliers of the Chessboard! On Saturday, October 21st, we hosted a chess tournament here at Meigs Middle. 158 students from throughout the region were here and we heard many compliments about what a nice school we have! Thanks to all who make that possible. In the Junior High section, Robert Cheng took home the sixth place trophy. In the crowded Elementary section, Tyler Reynolds won the sixth place trophy, Chaitanya Gokhale won the 12th place medal, Jack Reynolds finished in 17th place, and along with Kyan Brown and Devmi Hewavithana the group won the FIRST place team trophy for our school! In the unrated section, Hayden Tan took home the second place trophy and James Duckworth won the sixth place trophy. Together they captured the fifth place team trophy. Outstanding results for all, and congratulations to all these Cavaliers of the Chessboard! On Saturday, March 25th, the Tennessee State Scholastic Team Chess tournament was held at Tennessee Tech University in Cookeville and Meigs was well represented, having previously qualified to attend. Our Junior High team, consisting of Leo Chang, Frank Yang, Ethan Edwards and Garrett Scott, finished tenth. Robert Cheng, Roger Chen, Tyler and Jack Reynolds, James Scott and Ocean Chang comprised our Elementary team which brought home the THIRD PLACE trophy! Congratulations to all these Cavaliers of the Chessboard! On Saturday, February 11th, a Scholastic Chess Tournament was held at Percy Priest Elementary School, and three of our students competed. In the 5th and 6th grade section, brothers Tyler and Jack Reynolds finished 12th and 16th and brought home the 3rd place team trophy. In the 7th through 12th grade section, Robert Cheng won the 6th place trophy. Congratulations to these Cavaliers of the Chessboard! On Saturday, January 28th, the regional qualifier for the Tennessee State Chess Championships was held at St. Paul's Christian Academy and we had three of our students in attendance. In the crowded Elementary section, our players were Jack Reynolds, Tyler Reynolds, who won the 16th place medal, and Robert Cheng, who took home the second place trophy and will be going to "state" on February 18th. Congratulations to these Cavaliers of the Chessboard, and good luck to Robert at the State Championships! On Saturday, December 3rd, a chess tournament was held at Central Magnet School in Murfreesboro. Our own Tyler Reynolds was in attendance and had great results! Tyler tied for 10th place in the Elementary Section and finished in 12th out of 40 contestants. Way to go! On Saturday, November 5th, a Scholastic Chess Tournament was held at Valor Collegiate Academy and we had five of our players in attendance. Maya Hall did well in the Unrated Section, Roger Chen brought home the 7th place trophy in the Elementary Section, and in the Junior High Section, Robert Cheng won the 5th place trophy, Leo Chang won the 10th place trophy, and Ethan Edwards completed the team which won the 5th place team trophy for our school. Congratulations to these Cavaliers of the Chessboard! On Saturday, October 22nd, we hosted a chess tournament here at Meigs Middle Magnet. There were 120 students in attendance, and many of our guests commented on what a nice school Meigs is! We know how right they are! In the crowded Elementary section, James Scott took home the 20th place medal, Tyler Reynolds won the 17th place medal and Roger Chen landed the 9th place trophy. Ocean Chang and Jack Reynolds completed our team which won the SECOND place team trophy. In the Junior High section, Leo Chang won the 8th place trophy and Robert Cheng took home the 6th place trophy. With the help of Ethan Edwards, Frank Yang, Farah and Khry Ommay, the FIRST place trophy was awarded to the Meigs team. In the Unrated Section, we had outstanding results. Malika Arifova won the 14th place medal, Maya Hall brought home the 7th place trophy, Ben Berkenmeier secured the 5th place trophy, Wesley Shannon won 4 of 5 games to win the 3rd place trophy, and Javokhir Arifova Tied for first and won the Second place trophy. Kai Wardlow and Kristian Allen helped the team win for their school the FIRST place trophy. In the three sections we entered, our teams brought home two first and one second place trophy! Congratulations to all these Cavaliers of the Chessboard! On Saturday, September 24th, a chess tournament was held at the Overbrook School and Meigs was well represented. In the unrated section, newcomer Maya Hall played well and finished in the top half. In the Junior High section, Ethan Edwards and Leo Chang both won over half of their games and also finished in the top half. In the Elementary section, Roger Chen took home the 7th place trophy and Robert Cheng came in second and therefore qualified for the prestigious Nashville City Championship!
